Early Life
Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father was a priest and his mother created appliances to help with farm work. Tesla stated his inventive creativity came from his mother.
Tesla wanted to be an engineer, but his father insisted he enter priesthood. At age seventeen, Nikola Tesla caught cholera (an infection of the small intestine caused by bacteria). His father promised if he survived, he could attend the famous Austrian Polytechnic School. Later, his dream became real.
Tesla began his studies in mechanical and electrical engineering. His quest for better electricity began when a physics teacher showed a dynamo running on direct current (DC). Tesla worked on this new idea for years, trying to develop AC electricity.
At age 24, he discovered the answer. Tesla then invented the induction motor between 1885 and 1887. After this, he was hired by power companies to improve their DC generator facilities. He attempted to persuade investors to invest in AC electricity, but to no avail. He then set out to meet Thomas Edison, the world famous engineer.
